When it comes to investing our hard-earned money on designer pieces, it’s obviously important to find a style you absolutely love.
Handbags have long been considered an investment staple, that if chosen prudently gives an excellent return on your investment over time, but that’s the keyword “prudently”.
It’s important to educate yourself on which handbags will hold their value and never go out of style. The exclusive Birkin, for example, is forecasted to double in value in the next 10 years.
But that’s not the only bag worth scooping up. This is what our longtime guest blogger and an avid collectionist/columnist Ritu Marwah has to say about the styles you need to try.
“To get the most resale value for your investment bag, I only have one piece of advice: Invest in the holy trinity—Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès. While the value of luxury handbags can fluctuate due to trends or buzz, these three iconic brands in certain styles almost always maintain their resale value if cared for adequately.

1. Hermes Birkin
Birkins are the most exclusive of all the handbag lineups. The power behind the Hermes brand is their limited availability which creates an unparalleled level of scarcity and exclusivity other brands have yet to achieve.
While there’s no such thing as a Hermès waiting list, getting your hands on one of these pieces depends on your personal relationship with the Hermes salesperson or sheer luck.
The Birkin specifically is the most sought-after handbag of all. On the arms of celebrities including Victoria Beckham, Alessandra Ambrosio, Kate Moss, and the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan, this bag has exponentially increased in popularity. The fervor for Birkins transcends both retail and resale—
We constantly search for well-kept Birkins around the globe as strategic investment for our own inventory or by exclusive request from our long-time customers. these rare pieces can easily retail for anywhere in between INR 7 Lac to 1.2 Crore INR.
Most Birkins retain or increase in value, depending on leather, hardware, and demand. If you happen to score the exclusive, highly sought-after black Birkin with gold hardware or otherwise known amongst the fashion tribe as ‘the holy grail,’ this bag will pay you back in spades.
One of the rarest of all Birkins, the Himalayan Birkin is famously owned by Mrs. Nita Ambani, wife of the richest man in Asia, who has often been spotted proudly carrying the same.
2. The Chanel classic flap bag
While Birkin regularly beats the stock market, it’s not the only bag known for providing such stellar returns.
The Chanel classic flap bag is one of the most iconic and widely recognized of all Chanel creations. Our fashion advisor shares “Ten years ago, I purchased my first Chanel medium flap in caviar leather for INR 120,000. This same exact bag now retails for INR 370,000”. That is a 206% return (not adjusted for inflation).
Whereas, in the last decade, the stock market has given a total nominal return of under 49% (not adjusted for inflation). Now that’s something for a combination of love and investment.
The resale value of this bag retains or increases depending on leather and hardware & It’s a constant favorite of Alexa Chung, Rita Ora, Demi Lovato, Nora fatehi, and the likes.
3. Chanel Boy Bag
Another bag to consider for investment is the Chanel Boy Bag.
While the Boy Bag is fairly new, introduced in 2011, it’s now a mainstay, joining the ranks of the classic flaps and reissue flaps.
Five years ago, this bag started at INR 180,000. Today the Chanel Boy Bag starts at INR 370,000 retail.

The Neverfull continues to be one of the fastest selling handbags on our catalogue. While certain fashion industry reports dictate there’s a decline in the category of tote handbags for other brands,
the Louis Vuitton Neverfull remains popular due to periodic price increases and high demand.
The Neverfull is one of Louis Vuitton’s all-time most successful bags that come in endless options of materials as well as limited editions and special artist collaborations.
It has been worn by A-listers like Sofía Vergara, Cara Delevingne, Diane Kruger, and Reese Witherspoon.

5. Louis Vuitton Alma
Designed by Louis Vuitton’s grandson Gaston-Louis Vuitton in 1934, the Alma bag was named after the Alma Bridge, which connects two renowned Paris neighborhoods over the Seine.
This is the most structured of the iconic LV bags, featuring a sturdy leather bottom, protective studs, and rolled leather handles. The Alma bag on average retains over 75% of its retail value depending on its condition, edition & print.
